Some music journeys begin with a studio session. For D Wesley, it started much earlier with a young boy putting his thoughts into songs at just eight years old.
Born Dein E.B David West, D Wesley is a Port Harcourt based Nigerian music artist and songwriter from Asari-Toru Local Government Area of Rivers State. Over the years, what began as an early interest in songwriting has developed into a serious creative pursuit, with the artist now working to establish a sound and identity of his own.
His journey is also one that sits outside the usual description of a musician. D Wesley holds a degree in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering from Rivers State University, while his creative experience includes working as a musical content writer for The Tide newspaper in Rivers State.
Today, music remains at the centre of his creative direction, with D Wesley developing what he calls the AfroWestern sound.
A Love for Music That Started at Eight
For D Wesley, songwriting isn’t a recent discovery.
He says he started writing songs when he was only eight years old. That early beginning gave him years to experiment with words, ideas and melodies before taking his musical ambitions further.
Growing up in Rivers State and later building his base in Port Harcourt, he continued to develop his creativity while pursuing his education.
That combination of education and music has become an important part of his story. Rather than abandoning his creative side while studying engineering, D Wesley continued developing his songwriting and artistic abilities.
From Engineering to the Creative World
D Wesley’s academic background is in Agricultural and Environmental Engineering, a field far removed from the music studio.
He graduated from Rivers State University, but his creative interests continued to pull him toward music and writing.His experience as a former musical content writer for The Tide newspaper in Rivers State also gave him another connection to the entertainment and creative space.
Writing about music and creating music may be different disciplines, but both require an understanding of words, ideas and storytelling—qualities that have remained part of D Wesley’s journey.
The Sound He Calls AfroWestern
One of the things that separates D Wesley’s current musical direction from a straightforward artist biography is the sound he says he is pioneering: AfroWestern.
For him, the name represents an attempt to develop something personal and recognisable rather than simply fitting into an existing box.
His goal is to continue shaping a sound that reflects his artistic personality while giving listeners something they can associate with D Wesley.

According to the artist, he came across a post calling on serious industry professionals to get in touch. He responded, and the conversation eventually continued on Instagram.
D Wesley says the exchange led to an unexpected message from an account associated with Ne-Yo, asking him to send a link to his sound.
